Our building was built in 1933 for the U.S. Post Office. After the new Post Office was built in 1989, the Board of Fremont County Commissioners purchased the grand old building from the U.S. Postal Service. They in turn arranged for the Fremont Center for the Arts to lease it with an option to purchase. In January 1992 the FCA moved into the building, and completed payment on the price set by the county. The deed was recorded on August 8, 2000.

Located in "Historic Downtown Cañon City," the FCA is across the street from the Cañon City Library, and within walking distance of the Cañon City History Museum, the Prison Museum and the Dinosaur Depot Museum. (Check the "Community Heritage Pass" for a one-price admission to the FCA and the three museums!)

This is a beautiful Italianate Renaissance-style block building, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The foyer floors are of marble and the gallery has been completely remodeled to accommodate the monthly showcase displays. New tract lighting has been installed to highlight the artwork on display. The Gallery has high ceilings and tall windows, providing an airy and comfortable setting.

The library houses a collection of over 300 books dealing with art history, the lives and works of artists as well as books on art techniques. The Gift Shop displays a fine collection of local artists’ fare and is filled with unusual gifts. The building is handicap accessible and has a patio on the west side with lovely trees. Music plays throughout the day and visitors are encouraged to come in and enjoy the offerings and tranquility of this beautiful building.
